Tutorial: Wedding Makeup

I just came back from a very fancy wedding.  There was lots of hustle and bustle, the energy and excitement of the big day permeated everything.  It was a lovely affair....there's really nothing quite like a summer wedding.

Getting your makeup done is not something most people get done often. And when they do it's for big occasions, like a wedding.  Big occasions where there will be lot of pictures taken so they want to look their best.   But here's the thing about getting your makeup done.  When you meet the makeup artist, you usually have no makeup on.  And they've never met you before.  So everyone is at a disadvantage. You have dreams of being the most glamorous version of yourself.  And the makeup artist has an idea of how they think you should look based on their experience and their vision for you. In reality, this can lead to confusion and honestly, a bit of frustration and disappointment at times.

Here are a few suggestions for you for when you're getting your makeup done, whether you're the bride, the bridesmaids, mother of the bride/groom, or just a fabulous friend....

1.  Meet the makeup artist for the first time (especially if you have the luxury of doing a makeup trial) wearing your makeup as you would on a normal day.  Bring your makeup remover or some wipes so they can start with a clean face after you've had your initial talk.  Not all makeup artists carry makeup remover, and besides, you want to use what's right for your skin.  If your time is limited, bring in your favorite picture of yourself, one where you think you look your best, to show the makeup artist.  This will be tremendously helpful in terms of communication with each other.

2.  Bring in a tear sheet from a magazine of makeup you like.  That said, take notice of the features of the person in the tear sheet you bring.  If you are fair and have small features, maybe Kim Kardashian isn't a good reference for you.  If you're dark haired and have bigger features, maybe Cate Blanchett isn't a good match.  You may not be able to achieve that look.  Try to pick someone who at least has a similar eye shape so that you know the key elements of the look will translate.

3.  Have a camera on hand.  And not just your phone.  Bring in a point and shoot so you can take pictures of the makeup.  You may want to see how it looks in a photo and decide from there if the look is working.  Sometimes it's hard to voice your opinion right away.  The person doing your makeup is an "expert" so you may feel intimidated.  But the truth is that you know your face better than anyone else, and YOU have to be comfortable on the big day, so speak your mind.  Makeup artists are used to collaboration.  You won't offend anyone.  That's part of working as a team, it's part of the job.

3a.  Another good reason to use a real camera is so you can play with the flash.  Is your face the same color as your neck and chest?  Is the "dewy look" you requested more greasy than dewy?  Do your eyes look too dark, too small, not dark enough?  Does that trendy dark lip look too severe?  Show your finance, friends, mom, co-workers.  Do they think you look like the best version of you?

4.  Try to look like yourself.  Sometimes people want to go for BIG glamour but they normally wear pretty simple makeup.  A full strip of fake lashes may seem like a good idea, but if you aren't used to wearing them, then they may feel too alien for you to feel comfortable.  And who is going to be there with the lash glue if they start to come off when you're dancing the night away?  Those types of things take maintenance and you're on your own once the makeup artist leaves.  Opt for a few individuals instead.

5. Forgo the fake tan for the wedding.  Or if you must, use a gradual self tanner and start a week before hand (and do a test with the product a few months in advance so you can see if the color is too orange or streaky).  Using a gradual tanner will help you avoid the white hands/white neck syndrome.  Or the patchy shoulder and elbow issues.  And be sure to moisturize before applying.  And again the next day.  Self tanners can be drying, and the dryness tends to exaggerate the patchiness.  But tanning in a booth only looks good for two days max and it just might not last til the wedding...

5.  Finally, bring a few favorite lipsticks or glosses.  The makeup artist may not be able to give you the lip color.  Or they may only be able to give you a little scoop of color.  At least have your favorite lippy on hand just in case.

Hope these are helpful!  I'll do a post of doing your OWN wedding makeup in a few days.

Kisses,
Fiona

And The Winners of the Victoria's Secret Beauty Giveaway Are......!

Thanks to everyone that sent in an entry for the VS Beauty Giveaway!  It was really exciting and fun to read everyones ideas of how to incorporate Effie Trinket's fantasy makeup into their real world life.  There were lots of really creative ideas, daring young ladies, and clearly lots of budding makeup artists out there!  I love that so many people were keen on pink shadow and bold lips..... I love to see people embrace color in their makeup!

It was very difficult to choose.  So many people had great answers, and if I could I would have given makeup to everyone!  But sadly, that's not how it works.  So on that note.....

Here are the winners who were chosen for their clear passion for makeup and their love for Effie....

Welcome, welcome! The time has come to select one courageous woman for the honor of representing Effie Trinket's over the top make in an everyday sort of fashion! I, Menaka volunteer as tribute to express my love for the Hunger Games and Effie's capitol look! I would in the arena of day to day wear, I would use my combat training in makeup to manipulate the beautiful tones of plums and pinks to create a downplayed duplicate of Effie's Makeup- keeping it to my lower lid. I love her lips- they really stand out! I would just scream out Manners!! With that pout lol! Not that I don't enjoy the snow white look- but I would make sure to have a healthy glow of colour and blush. I just love that! May the odds be ever in your favour! When choosing the hunger games champion- Victor Victoria Secret's Village here I come!

Effie Trinket's makeup would fit in well with this summer, highlighting the bright neon colours. To balance out Effie's drastic makeup I would pair the look with bright clothing to enhance to colours of summer.
One look Effie portrays is a pale neon pink and purple eye with a soft pink blush and blue lip, L'oreal offers a blue lipgloss within their summer GlamShine candy collection, the sheer colour of the lipgloss will help to put a modern spin on Effie's blue lip. Also in this look she seems to have a yellow liner, a paler yellow/white colour will help to open up the eye and copliment the look. The paleness of the pink and purple in a particular look of Effie's is not too elaborate therefore it being more flexible for daywear. To reflect the colours from the face I would opt for high-waisted hot pink shorts and a simple white vest.
Another look of Effie's shows her bold eyeshadow dominating her makeup; a yellow highlight, green lip and blue liner and mascara. To make this look more wearable for the day I would probably swap the blue mascara for black/brown but keep the liner. Adding soft bronzer to contour and Effie has a hot pink lip. Perhaps to make the look more wearable during the day I would tone down the eyeshadows and liners to pastels colours of this season, making the look much more softer and wearable - keeping the hot pink lip. If staying with true Effie style and keeping the eyeshadows I would drop the hot pink lip. This look would go perfectly with tropical or tribal print clothing which is always around during the summer months. Another clothing option may be a solid colour matching one of the eyeshadows, finidng a balance between the colours.
I am not a professional makeup artist or claim to be, these are just a few of my ideas that I would use to play around with Effie's look.

How could I not participate when this blog post includes two of my favorites: Victoria's Secret and a giveaway!? While I wouldn't go as far as Effie Trinket did (unless the occasion called for it), her use of fair colors mixed with bright accents can be tamed for normal day wear. For starters, I love the luminosity of her foundation, which can be achieved with minimal blush and translucent face shimmer. It gives a fresh look :) Her bold, colorful eyeshadow can be minimized so that it's not as eye-popping. Summertime is the best time for incorporating color in your makeup routine. Pairing bright eyeshadow with bold lips would make for the perfect complement to any summertime outfit!

Get the Look: Elizabeth Banks at the "People Like Us" Premiere

Elizabeth has been a busy bee this year!  This was our 4th or 5th red carpet event this year so far!  I love getting to make her up, she loves clothes, loves makeup and always wants to play with her look...

For the premiere of "People Like US", a simple but strong look was what we were going for.  I kept the brows well defined and structured, added a little contour and use a lip pencil for a soft, almost stain-like effect on the lips. When I applied the lip, I softened the edges with a Q-Tip so the line wouldn't feel harsh. For the eyes I did a soft wash of a warm taupe and lined the eyes just at the lash line.  I swept a bit of it under the lower lashes just to add a little depth. The taupe underneath almost reads as a shadow from the lashes. It's a clean look that's pretty and fresh.  Not tricky, just lovely....

Get the Look: Cody Horn at the Young Hollywood Awards

Cody wanted a very effortless look.  Not much foundation, a bit of an eye, a hint of a lip.... I kept the skin luminous and bare, just adding a little warmth to her skin, and used two different colors of bronzer to add dimension and a sun kissed feeling to the face (a lighter matte underneath and a darker shimmery color over it).

I skipped powder eyeshadow and just used liner to play up her eyes. I used bronze cream liner/shadow on the upper lash line and under the lower lashes first, and then added a khaki green along the top lash line, finishing up with two coats of mascara on the top and bottom.

I used a chubby lip pencil mixed with a matte lip balm for the lip color. It gave the lips a hint of color without looking "lipsticky" and kept her look young and easy...

Get the Look: Elizabeth Banks at the MTV Movie Awards

For the MTV Movie Awards Elizabeth wore a really cool Elie Saab jumpsuit.  She was covered tip to toe, but with the plunging lace neckline and fitted shape it was very, very sexy.  For the makeup we went with a strong eye and a neutral lip.   It looked great with her easy breezy top knot which was done by Jenny Cho.

After I prepped her skin, I applied foundation and concealer, then took a liquid luminizer and patted it on to the bridge of her nose and along her cheekbones.  I set the face with loose powder and applied a bit of blush to her cheeks.

For the eyes I used two different colors to achieve a smoky eye; a shimmery grey on the bottom and a purple on the top lid...It gives a little bit of a twist to a smoky eye.  I lined the inside of the eye with a dark grey and then smudged the grey liner into the lower lashes, blending it down into the skin.  I took the grey shadow and swept it over the liner, effectively setting the liner and making the color stronger.  For the top of the lid I smudged the grey liner along the top lashes, and then applied a dusting of the plum shadow over the lid.  I used the shimmery pink in the quad to add a little highlight to the inner corners of her eyes, and the lilac color to blend the purple up and out.  When I finished the eyes, I used a brown brow pencil to strengthen and slightly elongate Elizabeth's brows.

I used my finger to pat on the lip color so that it was less a lipstick and more of a stain.  It's nice because there's color to the lips, without the sheen of a lipstick of a gloss.  It makes the look feel a little cooler and less done.

Fiona
