Get the Look: Brittany Snow for the MTV Movie Awards

Hair: Aviva        Stylists: Meritt and Emily

After moisturizing I used a tinted moisturizer and concealer to perfect the skin.  A mix of nude and pink cream blush added a little soft color to the cheeks, but nothing too overpowering.  Brittany wanted to play up her eyes so I mixed together plum and steel shadows to create a sexy smokey eye.  A little black liner at the lash line, under the shadow, gives the lashes more definition and makes them look more lush.  Her eyes are such a stunning blue and the mix of grey and plum really makes the color intensified, it's a lovely option for a smokey eye.

Get the Look: Lucy Hale at The Kid's choice Awards

Hair: Kristen Ess     Styling: Emily and Merritt     Dress: Dior

For the Kid's Choice Awards Lucy wanted a bright lip, so I picked the brightest, boldest lip in my kit; Obsessive Compulsive's Lip Tar in Anime.  It looked amazing with her white dress, strong brows and pretty hazel eyes.

First I used Chanel AquaLumiere in Beige 20 to even out her skin tone, adding a highlighter along the bridge of the nose and tops of the cheekbones.  A little contour and pretty peach blush made the skin glow.

I didn't want to do too much on the eyes since the lip was such a statement so I kept it to a wash of soft plums and neutrals for definition, a bit of black liner and then lots of mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

A bold lip can be tricky.  After the first layer, I blotted the lips, powdered the edges of the lips, and then applied a second coat to prevent feathering and to keep it locked in place.

And now for something completely different.....

Every once in a while I branch out on this blog to bring you something random or inspiring that I love.

I can't remember how I stumbled on Charles Burchfield's work, but when I saw it, I lost my mind.  The color palettes are stunning and I love the way he almost paints around the subject matter, it's all just so unique and interesting.  And most of these paintings were done in the late 1910's and early 1920's which I found really fascinating.

Here are a few examples of his work.  I hope you find it as interesting as I do.  He has a few books in publication, which are totally worth buying.  Check amazon for book titles and wikipedia for more info about this amazing artist that more people should know about.

Exciting News!

I am so excited to announce the new relationship in my life.....

I am the new spokesperson for mark. cosmetics, the cute, sassy little sister to Avon.  I love their attitude towards makeup....it's playful, fun, celebratory... all of the things you want a makeup brand to be.  They aren't afraid of color or of playing with trends.  And that's what makeup is all about!

Experiment!
Play!
Try new things, try on new personalities!

I'll be doing lots of posts about their makeup.  I'll be posting about my favorite mark. products, the new products as they come out, as well as how to get some of your favorite looks using mark.  I am beyond thrilled about it all and I hope you are too.

Here's a little screen grab from their website about the launch!  Love the pretty spring colors....

Tutrorial: How to Fix a Broken Powder

It's happened to all of us.  You open a compact -- be it blush, eyeshadow or powder -- and it's shattered into a zillion little pieces.  It always elicits a gasp, quickly followed by a heartfelt "oh NO!!"  But it's not fodder for the trash.  It just takes a few steps and your makeup will be as good as new again.  So don't toss it!

Here are the things you'll need:
* clean paper
* a round edged knife
* rubbing alcohol
* a spoon

First, lay down a clean piece of paper to work on.  I like to use cover stock because you can pour the powder back into the pan more easily but any regular printer paper will do.  Then use the knife to scrape out any product that's left in the pan onto the clean paper.  Crush the pieces into a fine powder, free of chunks and clumps and carefully pour it back into the pan.

Now, I tend to use what I have laying around, and I happen to love cheese, so I use a small cheese knife to push the product into the edges of the pan.  I work from left to right pressing the powder back into shape, in almost a petal formation.  Then I press the center down and go over the sides again.

Like I said, I use what's in my kitchen, and my husband is a coffee freak. He has a beautiful espresso tamper (that he would be mortified to know I use for reconstructing compacts!) and it works perfectly for evenly pressing the powder back into shape in round powder compacts.  (Sorry honey!)  But you can also use a spoon.  A big soup or table spoon is good for pressing down the powder, or you could use something like a round lip balm tin (wrapped in plastic wrap--we want it to be sanitary!). It just needs to be flat.  I gently twist the tamper back and forth to really compact the product back into the pan.

The next step is to take rubbing alcohol and lightly pour it onto the powder until it is completely wet.  I like to give it overnight for the alcohol to fully evaporate and for the powder to dry out.  Then I take a spoon and burnish the powder just to make good and sure it's fully adhered again.

And there you go, compact salvaged!

Chanel Spring 2013 Couture

How breathtaking is the makeup for the Chanel couture show?  Peter Philips knocked it out of the park.  It's ethereal and romantic without overkill.  The nothing lip and softly flushed cheek are a perfect pairing for the incredible eye.

I love the layers.  I love the lace.  The netting, the soft sheen on the black on the lid....I love it all.  Simply gorgeous.

Get the Look: Rosie Huntington Whitley at the Golden Globes

For the Golden Globes we gave a subtle nod to Hollywood glamour but with a modern feeling. The eye was simple; a soft wash of a neutral color and a bit of definition in the socket. I elongated the eye with a brown pencil, and softened the line with a brown shadow. I love using brown, it's so sexy but keeps the look soft. I used a black mascara on top (two coats) and a brown/black on the bottom to keep it softer (one coat). Groomed brows, a must, are lightly sculpted with pencil. I am obsessed with brows. They make a face!

I dusted bronzer on the cheekbones and a bit on the forehead for a healthy fresh glow. Rosie is so incredibly gorgeous and a bit of a sun kissed glow  really suits her.

A red lip screams glamour, but so that it's not overpowering, I matted down the finish and made the edges soft and undefined, patting it on with my finger. I love a red lip and it felt so chic with her Saint Laurent dress.

Get the Look: Jessica Alba at the Spike Awards

        Hair: Jen Atkin             Stylist: Brad Goreski

For the Spike Awards I went with a really bold orange lip and very little else on the face.  I used the same color on her eyes that I used on her cheeks, a warm bronze powder from NARS, and then added a little of the Benefit luminizer on the bridge of her nose and eyelids.  I let the lips, brows and lashes do all of the work for her look.  Sometimes a simple bold lip is enough of a statement.

Get the Look: Jessica Chastain at the Zero Dark Thirty Premiere

           Hair: Jenny Cho           Stylist: Elizabeth Stewart

I love Jessica's alabaster skin, and the soft glow of a luminous foundation truly makes her look lit from within.  I used very little makeup on her eyes.  A little taupe shadow and liner with lots and lots of black mascara to give her soft, sexy, flirty eyes.

A peachy flush on the cheeks and tangelo color on the lips felt polished and complimented her flawless complexion.

Get the Look: Cody Horn at the Premiere of "The Watch"

Hair: Jamal Hammadi

I love working with Cody Horn.  She's tall, beautiful, and wickedly funny.  You'll be seeing a lot more of her in the next few years so keep your eyes peeled.

Playing with the cool, tough look of the leather dress, I went with strong brows, a strong dark lip, and minimal makeup on the eyes.  I love to emphasize a brow, but it has to be the right time and the right place.  It can add a subtle strength to a look that I love.  But it can also go drag queen so you have to make sure to keep the rest of the look in check so that you don't over do it.

Get the Look: Nikki Reed at the Breaking Dawn Part 2 Premiere

Hair: Mara Roszak
Stylist: Nicole Chavez

I can't believe that it's over.  I did Nikki's makeup for all five of the Twilight movie premieres, and this was the very last one.  Well, we saved the best for last.  Nikki looked like a true silver screen star in her strapless Versace dress, pulled back hair and sultry makeup.  Here's how to get her look.

Using a foundation brush I swiped foundation along the bridge of her nose, cheeks, chin and forehead and used a Beauty Blender to blend the color to the outer edges of her face.  After using concealer where needed, I dusted on a bit of loose powder, setting the foundation.  I have really been loving doing contour lately, so I used a little contour powder under the cheekbones.  They key is to have a light hand.  When done right it gives a beautiful, softly sculpted look to the face.  Another trick is to add a bit of color to the cheek so there's still life to the skin.  I added a touch of a peach blush just to add that warmth to the skin.

Nikki has amazing brows, so I do very little to them, just fill them in here and there and then set them in place with a gel.  For the eyes I used a soft wash color from a chubby pencil from just above the crease to the lash line, and under the lower lashes as well.  Then I dusted on a slightly warmer color so it wouldn't look too metallic.  I used a taupe pencil on the waterline of the eyes to add that sultry look.  The taupe doesn't close up the eye black does so it still feels soft, but sexy.  I curled the lashes really well, added a few individual lashes for fullness and length and then did 3 coats of mascara on top and two on the bottom.

I generally prefer to focus on one feature; lips or eyes, and this was no exception.  A warm nude color on the mouth completed the look without competing with the eyes.

Get the Look: Jessica Alba at the 1st Annual Baby2Baby Gala

Hair: Renato Campora     Stylist: Brad Goreski

Jessica Alba is truly beautiful.  Many women in Hollywood are, but she is just as beautiful on the inside.  Not only is she a hard working actress, she also recently founded The Honest Company (which makes non toxic baby and household products--and I can say as a consumer that they are awesome!  I've been using the diapers on my baby since the company launched last year).  She is also a member of the board for Baby2Baby, a non-profit that gives new and gently used products to children ages 0-4 in Los Angeles.  I love chatting with her about green products, baby stuff, makeup...you name it.  I always, always learn something from her!

For the 1st Annual Baby2Baby Gala, Jessica wore a breathtaking Valentino gown and jewels from Harry Winston.  It was so romantic and pretty that I couldn't resist following suit with the makeup.  I did want it to have a little oomph though so I went with a steely grey shadow on the eyes and loads of flirty lashes paired with bronzed skin and rosy lips and cheeks (I actually used the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick as a base for the shadow, pressing it into the lid with my fingers before brushing on the shadow).  I skipped eye liner altogether so it would have a softer feel, just a wash of metallic grey over the lid.  The feeling is simultaneously strong and soft.

Sun Precautions: Straight Talk

The sun.

Some people love the feeling of the sun on their skin.  For me, it makes me feel like a piece of bacon.  Both of my parents are from England.  You can translate that as me having cheap skin that burns when you switch the light on.  Growing up in California, I felt like a vampire, shunning the sun as it beat down on me 300 days out of the year.  And even though I have tried to hide from the sun for the majority of my adult life, I am still feeling the sting of the sun's mighty strength.  I just had 2 biopsies on moles, one leading to surgery on my back to have the surrounding skin removed as one of the suspicious moles was just a little too suspicious.

A little more than a year ago I lost my little sister to melanoma.  At the ripe old age of 26.

I would have had them take 20 times more skin if they said it would make me safe.

For me, tanning is like smoking.  Why tempt fate.  The side effects are deadly and the long term results are the same for both: wrinkles, gross looking skin, premature aging and the strong likelihood of cancer.  Find another hobby.  One that isn't going to put your life in jeopardy.

Smokers and sun worshippers don't like this kind of talk.  And instantly defenses go up.  I understand.  I used to be a smoker and I loved smoking.  Until one day I took a good look at my mom, who smoked for decades (but quit 30 years ago--thank god) and deduced that smoking wasn't going to be a good look for me.  Her skin couldn't handle it.  And I knew mine wouldn't be able to either, and I quit on the spot.

Vanity won the battle over nicotine.  Whatever it takes.

But here I am, a true sun fearing wanna-be vampire who is paying the price for the sun that I do get, just walking and driving around.  I seem to have some precancer on my lower lip.  From lipgloss??  I am not entirely sure, but the thought of having to have the errant cells burned off sounds scary.  But not as scary as cancer.  And so off they will come.  (And I'm committed to wearing a matte lipstick every time I leave the house from now on.)

I am writing this because I think that NO ONE should die from melanoma.  If you keep your eyes peeled it is entirely possible to catch it, remove the skin/mole and be clear.  My sister let a weird looking mole go unchecked.  And by the time it was biopsied, the cancer had a mighty hold on her body.  She lived for 5 years with Stage 4 cancer, an incredible feat.  She lived her life to the fullest; had a job, a boyfriend, went to school, had terrific adventures, but ultimately, it was avoidable.

I'd give anything to have her back.

Go see a dermatologist.  Get checked every 6 months.  Just go do it.  Especially if you're a freckly or moley person.  And find a dermatologist who is passionate about what they do.  You want them to care about your safety and well being.  Biopsies aren't fun, but you know what really isn't fun?  Surgery.  Or cancer.

So please, do it for me.  Go have someone check out your skin.  And if you see me in LA, I'll be the one in a jacket on an 80 degree day, wearing a hat and bright red lipstick.

(That's me on the right, in Tahiti.  This is how I roll on sunny locations....covered head to toe)

Christina Hendricks is so gorgeous! I have loved her as Joan on Mad Men since it's inception, and it was such a great pleasure to work with her.  She has such amazing features and it's fun to play them all up simultaneously!  It's all about a lash and a liner and a cheek and a lip, and it all comes together and works on her without looking overdone or garish.  She is a radiant beauty and I hope I get to make up this face again soon.
